Dr Belen Olmos Giupponi


I am an Associate Professor in Law and Head of Law at Kingston University. Before joining Kingston, I was a Senior Lecturer in EU and International Law and Head of Law at Liverpool Hope University (2016-2018). Previously, I was a Lecturer in Law, LLM/MSc Director and Programme Validation Director at the University of Stirling in Scotland. From 2010 until 2013, I was an Associate Professor of EU and International Law at King Juan Carlos University in Madrid. I was a Max Weber Research Fellow at the European University Institute (2007-2009). From 2004 until 2007, I worked as an Assistant Professor of International Law at University Carlos III of Madrid. I hold a PhD in International Law from the University Carlos III of Madrid (2004, summa cum laude); an LLM in Human Rights (University Carlos III) and an MA in International Relations. I have undertaken research in EU law, general international law, international economic law, human rights law and environmental law. I have published more than 15 articles in leading journals, including the Leiden Journal of International Law, Transnational Environmental Law, ICSID Review, European Union Journal, The International Journal of Human Rights Journal of Business Law, Arbitration International, European Energy and Environmental Law Review, Journal of European Legal Studies and the European Yearbook of International Economic Law. I have been a visiting scholar at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law - University of Cambridge (2016 and 2011); the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies of the University of London (2015); Freie Universitat Berlin (2011 and 2013); Stanford Law School (2012) and Brown University (2011). My research lies at the intersection between of different areas of law (namely, International Economic Law, European Union Law and Environmental Law), underscoring what are broadly defined as transnational law process. I have secured research funding from different bodies, including the European Union, the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation and the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland. In terms of professional practice, I am actively engaged in legal clinic activities at international level (amicus curiae), having provided advice to non-governmental organisations such as Save the Children (Spain) and the Organization of American States.
