Dr Catherine O'Brien

Senior lecturer

During my career at Kingston, I have taught a wide range of courses on both the French and the Film Studies degrees. Currently, I am the Module Leader for Global Cinema Cultures and French Language. I was the Course Director for the MA Film Studies from 2003-07 and teach on a number of postgraduate modules, including Gender and Sexuality in Contemporary Cinema. As Director of Studies, I have co-supervised an M.Phil on the films of Nouri Bouzid, and a PhD on the silent films of John Ford. I am currently the second supervisor for a doctorate on religion and DC comics. My research has encompassed two main areas: the First World War in French and German culture; and intersections between film and religion. My book entitled The Celluloid Madonna (investigating the screen portrait of the Virgin Mary) was published by Wallflower/Columbia University Press; and I am currently writing a book on the films of Martin Scorsese.
