Dr Claire M. Holdsworth

Early Career Research Fellow

An archivist and researcher specialising in artists' moving image, my work considers films, videos and performances of the 1970s/1980s with an emphasis upon sound and aural analyses. By excavating side-lined histories and critically examining the social contexts of practice-based making alongside artworks, writings tend to foreground and explore the ways archives are remediated and re-written.

As an art historian, I explore the limits and methods that locate subjects, considering the means through which these histories are inscribed and shown today. I have published writings and texts in-print and online for publications such as Verigo magazine and journals including Harts & MINDS (along with those listed here). Reflecting my parallel interest in printed artefacts and writing, editorial work includes assisting Laura Mulvey and Sue Clayton with the anthology Other Cinemas (IB Tauris, 2017) and an ongoing role at Spark: UAL Creative Teaching and Learning Journal (since 2015).

Events are an important means of activating the histories I research, and projects tend to involve curated and live events - for example Towards Other Cinemas (Whitechapel Gallery cinema, 2017) or the symposium Writing Histories of the Moving Image (CSM, 2015). As part of my research fellowship at KSA I have presented at international conferences, undertaken guest lectures and facilitated research-led workshops (for students on the MRes Moving image at CSM and the MA Experimental Film at KSA amongst others).

I maintain close ties with other networks/institutions, including the British Artists' Film and Video Study Collection at Central Saint Martins (UAL) where I completed an AHRC funded PhD (2015/2016). As an archivist, I have catalogued varied private collections, including those of writer and curator Jasia Reichardt with parallel specialisms/interests in concrete poetry, Fluxus, kinetic art, early computer art and the artists Stefan and Franciszka Themerson. Prior to this I also worked in theatre and exhibitions, curating events for organisations such as Alpha-ville Festival (London, 2011) and completed an MA in Aural and Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths University London in 2009 and a BA in Comparative Literature from Kings College London in 2008.
