I am registered in general and mental health nursing and worked in both settings following qualification. Prior to doing my PhD I also completed a BSc. and MSc. in social policy. I have extensive experience in community mental health care and in nursing education. I am Associate Professor of mental health nursing in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education at Kingston University and St George's University of London. I lead and line manage the mental health senior lecturer/lecturer practitioner team. I teach social policy, communication skills and issues around medication adherence. My research interests lie in service user involvement, shared decision making around medication issues in mental health and communication between service users and professionals. Current projects include studies into Black, Asian and minority ethnic group perspectives on medication and on attitudes and knowledge regarding physical health skill development of mental health nurses.
My PhD study was a grounded theory study, exploring the perspectives of service users (and their carers) around the experience of being detained under mental health law and having compulsory medication.
I am currently working on a project to develop an educational experience to enable health professionals to better understand Black, Asian and minority ethnic mental health service users and carers perspectives on medication adherence.
