Mrs Amy Porter

Senior Lecturer in Education, primary mathematics

About

My career in education started as a primary school class teacher. I worked in primary schools for over 20 years, mainly in inner-London. Following the completion of my MA Education, I began teaching mathematics education on the BA Education programme at the University of Roehampton. I also taught Professional Studies on the PGCE programme.

I have extensive experience in supporting education students while on placement, both as a mentor in school and as a University Liaison Tutor.

I joined Kingston University as a member of the mathematics team and I teach primary mathematics education across all year groups on the BA Education degree programme.This includes mathematics subject specialism modules. 

Areas of specialism

  • Mental Calculation Strategies used by children in KS1 and KS2
  • Young children's understanding of missing number equations

Qualifications

  • BA (Joint Hons) French and European Studies
  • MA Education

Research

As part of my PhD, I am currently conducting research into how young children solve missing number equations.
