Valerie Hawthorn

About

I am course director of Visual Narratives on the BA Creative and Cultural Industries. As a lecturer, a brand consultant and art director, I have led design teams in the industry and steered design students in education. I have vast experience in the commercial field of design across many different disciplines and platforms and have translated that to previous students who have subsequently delivered successful projects during their undergraduate years. My graduates from BA Graphic Design at Falmouth, in 2016, celebrated a record number of student D&AD awards. I have shared teaching theories and methods of pedagogy with fellow lecturers during my PGCHE, this has been invaluable and has defined my approach to teaching and research in the future. I have over 20 years working in London in the industry, as a designer and brand consultant working with brands and companies such as, London Olympics 2012, London Fashion Week, The Face magazine and Neville Brody, Condé Naste in New York, Wolff Olins, Peter Saville Associates, Laing O'Rourke for the build of the Cheesegrater skyscraper in London and also as part of the original team for WOMAD Festival with Peter Gabriel. I have a great deal of experience, applying design across 2D, 3D and media platforms, specifically linking industry, innovation and encouraging research and development. As a creative director of companies I have used my leadership skills to progress the strategic development of teams and companies within the industry, establishing many as leaders within their field.
