How to apply

Students apply for most full-time or sandwich first degree and HND courses through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). There is an alternative application route if they are applying for:

  • an art foundation course; or
  • a small number of work-based courses.

UCAS applications

All UCAS applications are now made online via UCAS Apply. Visit for video guides to the process.

As a rough guide, your son or daughter should submit their application online though UCAS Apply between the beginning of the September before they come to university and mid-January (if they are a British or EU applicant). For the best chance of receiving the right offers, they should submit their application as early as possible. Please visit the UCAS website for exact dates and more information.

It is important that they complete their application as fully as possible – as well as their personal details and academic record, they will need to supply a reference and make a personal statement, which the admissions tutor at Kingston will look at carefully.

Students can apply for up to five different courses. The UCAS code for Kingston University is K84. They will be able to follow the progress of their application online through UCAS Track after they've applied.

Alternative application routes

Some course applications are not made through UCAS. These include:

Keeping in touch

Once your son or daughter has made an application, we will keep in touch with them and let them know if there is anything we need them to do – so make sure that they give us the correct contact details.

UCAS will inform your son or daughter via UCAS Track whether or not we have offered them a place. If we have done so, we will also send them an email or letter direct, plus an offer guide through the post. They'll also get access to our Getting Ready website, which contains all the information an applicant will need.

Their faculty (the department that is responsible for teaching their course) will also correspond with them throughout the process, offering opportunities to come in and meet the staff, or just to make sure they know what is happening with their application.

Confirming a place

If we make your son or daughter a conditional offer they must fulfil certain criteria before they can be accepted on to the course. We will confirm their place via UCAS Track once they get the grades you need for their course. We'll then send them an email to direct them to online enrolment, after which they must also enrol in person.

We will make an unconditional offer if we are happy they have already satisfied the criteria and can attend the course. In this case we will confirm their place immediately via UCAS Track.

Sometimes exams and applications don't go as planned. If your son or daughter doesn't get the right grades for their course, don't panic! They can apply for ones that still have empty places through Clearing, which starts immediately after A-level results are released in August and goes on through most of September.

How to find a course through Clearing: If your son or daughter is interested in a course at Kingston, they should first contact us to talk about their options. If they find a course they like and meet the entry requirements, we will make them an offer directly (which is then confirmed by UCAS).

If your son or daughter gets better results than they're expecting, Adjustment allows them to reconsider where and what they want to study. If they don't find a suitable place elsewhere, they'll remain accepted at their original choice.

How to find a course through Adjustment: Adjustment starts immediately after A-level results are released in August (or when your son or daughter's 'conditional firm' choice changes to 'unconditional firm' if this is later), and goes on until early September.

From this time your son or daughter has a maximum of five calendar days to find an alternative course. They first need to register on UCAS Track to allow universities and colleges to view their application.

They then need to contact the universities and colleges direct to find a suitable place. They can contact as many as they wish, but can only receive one formal decision through Adjustment. Not everyone is eligible to apply through Adjustment so please visit the UCAS website for full information.
