Staging Histories: students working on a range of projects with Drama lecturer Trish Reid who introduces this core first-year module.

Making Theatre Happen: students at work on a range of practical pieces with drama lecturer Jackie Smart who introduces this core first-year module.

Three Ravens: extracts from an original piece created by second-year students, in a Gothic and interdisciplinary style, for the module Devising in Context.

Under the Knife: Full-length, original piece created by second-year students for the module Devising in Context in response to the history of plastic surgery.

Our students in action

KUDOS (Kingston University Drama On Stage)

KUDOS regularly presents top-quality theatre at festivals around the UK.

In 2015, an ensemble of 10 undergraduates presented the UK stage premiere of Howard Barker's Knowledge and a Girl at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Other recent Edinburgh productions have included Euripides' Medea, and Dream/Life, a play written and directed by postgraduate drama students. Undergraduates and postgraduates also join forces to present performances at the Camden Fringe Festival each summer. Performances at Camden and Edinburgh are part of our established programme of annual activities, as are performances at Kingston's very own International Youth Arts Festival (IYAF). In 2014, the Department presented Pericles and The Sultan's Queen at IYAF, as part of an international collaboration with the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, involving 22 student performers from both universities. Every year, students past and present are involved in IYAF, where another highlight was a 2012 production of The Taming of the Shrew from the theatre company By Moonlight, founded by Kingston alumni Tanju Duncan, Andy Currums and Wayne Hughes. Other extracurricular highlights include the 2008 KUDOS performance of The Ragged Child on the main stage of the Rose Theatre in Kingston, and in the summer of that year, our production Face in the Crowd being nominated for 'Best Ensemble' by The Stage at the Edinburgh Festival.

Theatre workshop

Drama studentsProduction work in drama is not solely focused on summer festivals and performance assessments. Our lively, extracurricular theatre workshop programme runs throughout the year, with drama students producing and creating independent productions with departmental support.

The theatre workshop programme creates a wide range of opportunities to gain practical experience – in performing, writing, directing, designing, and marketing. Past productions have included Othello, After Miss Julie, Motortown, 4:48 Psychosis, The Lord of the Flies, DNA – and many more! Undergraduate students have also led highly successful extracurricular projects in the local community, with Sapphire Dyer winning the University's award for Volunteer of the Year 2014 – presented by Chris Akabusi in a special ceremony. Undergraduate students also organise regular evenings of cabaret and clowning at local venues, and have performed on the street in local carnivals. Some students form their own companies while at Kingston – such as the improvisation troupe Bad Clowns – while others build relationships with MA and PhD students to work on a range of extracurricular practice-research projects – ranging from Shakespeare's Cymbeline, to the mediaeval drama Mankind, to new writing.
