Filmmaking BA(Hons): Course fees and funding

2019/20 fees for this course

The tuition fee you pay depends on whether you are assessed as a 'Home' (UK or EU), 'Islands' or 'International' student. In 2019/20 the fees for this course are:

* These fees are annual and may increase in line with inflation each year subject to the results of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

Eligible UK and EU students can apply to the Government for a tuition loan, which is paid direct to the University. This has a low interest rate which is charged from the time the first part of the loan is paid to the University until you have repaid it.

Tuition fees

Eligible students can apply to Student Finance England for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of tuition. The loan is paid directly to the University.

Living costs support

Eligible students can apply to Student Finance England for a loan to cover living costs. The loan is paid into your bank account in three instalments one at the start of each term. The maximum maintenance loan in 2019/20 is £11,672 if you live away from home and study at Kingston University or £7,529 if you live with your parents whilst studying.

Applying for loans

To apply for a tuition and/or maintenance loan, you need to create a Student Finance account and submit an online application with Student Finance England. Please see the links below if you are from another UK or EU country.

The package of funding available to students from other parts of the UK is slightly different. Please visit the relevant authority for more information:

European Union students

The UK Government has yet to confirm the position of EU students starting courses in the 2019/20 academic year.

Additional costs

For this course you will be:

  • involved in processes of making as means of exploration, experimentation, and understanding your practice by using a diverse range of media and materials;
  • required to purchase your own copy of books for required reading;
  • required to produce physical artefacts for assessment; and
  • offered to participate in optional study visits and/or field trips.

However, over and above this you may incur extra costs associated with your studies, which you will need to plan for.

External Hard Drive: you will need to purchase an external hard drive that can handle high definition video, with sufficient storage and is compatible with Kingston School of Art's editing environment. Please seek advice by email from tutors or technical staff before making your selection. Indicative costs are included in the table below. You will need the drive by the second week of commencing the course - so plenty of opportunity to take advice.

In order to help you budget, the information below indicates what activities and materials are not covered by your tuition fees:

  • Personal laptops and other personal devices.
  • Personal copies of books.
  • Optional study visits and field trips.
  • Printing costs.
  • Your own chosen art materials and equipment.
  • Costs of participating at external shows and exhibitions.
  • Film production costs (students receive advice about raising funding/crowd funding etc).
The costs vary every year and with every student, but an indicative list of costs per year, not covered by your tuition fees, is as follows:
