Lorelle Bascoe

Name: Lorelle Bascoe
Course: Real Estate Management BSc(Hons)
Year of graduation: 2014
Current role: Surveyor, Gerald Eve LLP

When deciding on the right university course, I was certain I wanted to study a degree that linked directly to a career path, which is why I chose real estate management at Kingston University. Not only was the course RICS accredited, the various modules echoed the type of work surveyors carry out on a daily basis, while providing the fundamental principles required before embarking on a career in property.

Throughout the course we were are assessed in various ways including exams, presentations, written submissions and practical assessments. This enabled me to leave university with a wide range of skills that can be applied in the workplace. Most importantly, there was a significant amount of group work which allowed you to build long term friendships and understand how to work in a team in order to meet specific deadlines.

I personally enjoyed the field trips both in the UK and abroad which enabled us to gather an understanding of the commercial property markets in Cardiff, Dublin and Lisbon throughout the course. Additionally, having the opportunity to work with students on other RICS accredited courses really emphasised the importance of collaborative working with professionals in different specialisms.

There was a great emphasis from the lecturers to ensure we gained enough work experience before graduating. I was fortunate enough to gain work experience in the property department at BT; in a residential property conveyancing department of a solicitor's practice and I also began working part-time at a small property management company, researching and assisting with valuation reports in my final year.

Additionally, Kingston University held a number of careers events for students to attend and meet representatives from various firms prior to applying for graduate positions. We also had a mock assessment centre exercise with HR professionals from various property companies.  I was able introduced myself to the HR team at Gerald Eve at two separate careers events at Kingston prior to applying for a graduate position there. Fortunately, I was offered a graduate position before completing my degree which was a great weight off my shoulders.

Since graduating with a First Class Honours in 2014, I have worked as a graduate surveyor for two years at Gerald Eve and qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and Registered Valuer in October 2016. Not only do I thank the great structured training programme provided through my workplace, but also the high standard of teaching and resources at Kingston University which prepared me for an exciting career in property.
