Applying via UCAS

You should submit your application between September, the year before you come to university, and mid-January. Submit your application as early as possible to have the best chance of receiving the right offers. Exact dates and more information can be found on the UCAS website.

Remember to:

  • complete your application fully with your personal details and academic record;
  • write a personal statement which will be used by the admissions tutors at your chosen university when they consider your application; and
  • supply a reference.

You can use UCAS Track to follow the progress of your course application, when you have submitted it to UCAS.

Your personal statement

Writing a personal statement is a key part of the UCAS application process. It's your opportunity to showcase your academic achievements, extracurricular activities and show your chosen university that you are a suitable applicant for your course.

Alongside your qualifications, the personal statement is a tool used by universities to decide who will get an offer to study with them. A well written personal statement will help you stand out from the crowd.

Give yourself plenty of time to prepare your personal statement.

Once you're certain that your personal statement is the best it can be, your teacher(s) or other referees will add their references. Make sure you leave enough time for them to write a suitable reference before the submission deadline. (If you're at school or college, it is likely that your teachers will set their own deadline for your application.)
