As part of our Sustainability Policy, Kingston University has undertaken to run an environmental management system. This is a framework for identifying and managing our environmental impacts, ensuring we are compliant with the wide range of UK and European environmental legislation, and capturing data in order to track and continually improve our performance, and share best practice across the institution.
Kingston University is committed to contributing positively to the environment, society and the economy, as such we have dedicated steering groups and a number of policies and programmes to ensure we achieve our objectives and constantly improve our performance.
*This strategy will remain in draft until the appointment of a new waste contractor in early 2017. We are currently carrying out consultation. If you have any comments, please contact email@example.com.
Kingston University declined to participate in the 2016 People and Planet Green League, due to ongoing concerns over methodology.
We are disappointed that this has led to People and Planet using inaccurate and/or outdated information to inform their ranking of the University, making it an unreliable picture of our sustainability performance.
In the past twelve months alone, we have: committed to 'Responsible Futures' in our Education Strategy and continue to embed sustainability in quality assurance processes and our Inclusive Curriculum work; made an initial benchmark assessment of sustainability in our research activities; reduced carbon emissions against a backdrop of an ambitious estate development programme; reached Level 4 of 5 of the Flexible Framework for responsible procurement, and are on track to achieve Level 5 by Spring 2017; increased re-use rates by around 5% and recycling by approximately 10%; and been shortlisted for two Green Gown awards for our waste reuse and reduction and informal curriculum biodiversity projects. We also host the Whole Earth? exhibition and are a member of the UK Sustainability Literacy Test Steering Group. These activities and achievements, and our institutional Environmental Management System currently in development, clearly demonstrate the University's ongoing commitment to sustainability and continual improvement, and we are confident that stakeholders will be able to view our Green League ranking in this context.
