A leading researcher in cardiac care has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the College of Paramedics.

Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing Tom Quinn, lead for the Emergency, Cardiovascular and Critical Care Research Group in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education run jointly by Kingston University and St George's, University of London, was nominated for the award by paramedic colleagues in recognition of his achievements and outstanding contribution to improving and advancing paramedic practice and, in turn, improving both patient care and population health.

Professor Quinn, who was elected as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 2016, began his career working as a cardiac nurse and went on to work in the Department of Health on policy to improve cardiac care. He used his role as a consultant cardiac nurse to lead nationwide strategies for heart attack and stroke care, and was closely involved in the publication of the Care at the Scene report published by the National Institute for Health Research.

Professor Quinn, who is also a member of the Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee, will be presented with his fellowship at the College of Paramedics Award Dinner in May and will join just a handful of people to receive the honour. As part of the award he will also added to the Roll of Honour on the College of Paramedics' records and website and be included on their Annual Report.

Professor Quinn, who has been responsible for teaching and supporting a number of paramedic students at undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels over the years, described receiving the honour as a career highlight. "I am really proud to have received this recognition from the College of Paramedics, acknowledging a career-long collaboration with paramedics in helping improve patient outcomes, particularly from acute cardiovascular emergencies. The profession has developed at great pace and I'm constantly in awe of the compassion, courage and professionalism of our paramedics.
