Guardian University Guide names Kingston University a top institution for fashion, journalism and publishing in latest rankings

Kingston University has been rated among the best institutions in the United Kingdom for fashion, journalism and publishing in this year's Guardian University Guide. There were also top 10 placings for its art, design and sport science courses in the national newspaper's 2018 listings.

For the second year in a row, the University's internationally acclaimed fashion programme came second overall in the fashion and textiles category, making Kingston University the highest-ranked institution in the country specialising in fashion specifically.

Meanwhile in the journalism, publishing and public relations category, the University climbed 12 places to fourth overall in the prestigious annual rankings – topping the tables as the highest-rated in London. Sport science also retained its top spot in the capital within the newly-released listings, climbing five places to 10th overall.

As the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture returns to its original name as the Kingston School of Art this year, the institution's expertise in the field was recognised as it secured sixth spot in the art subject table – including fine art and art history – a climb of 23 places. Kingston University was also placed eighth overall for design and crafts, which covers courses such as graphic design, illustration and animation, and product and furniture design.

There were strong performances across a number of other course areas for the University in the latest tables, with its media and film studies offering racing 32 places up the subject tables to 18th overall in 2018. In the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education, run in partnership with St George's, University of London, health professions featured in 19th place. The subject area covers courses including physiotherapy, paramedic science and radiography.

Kingston was also ranked the best modern university in London for pharmacy and pharmacology, biosciences, education, and English and creative writing.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr David Mackintosh said that being recognised as a top-performing institution across such a wide range of subject areas reflected the hard work and commitment of staff and students right across the University. "Our performance in these latest subject rankings is a testament to the efforts being made to provide the very best teaching, research and graduate opportunities for our students to ensure they can make the most out of their time here at Kingston," he said.

"I'm delighted to see we are continuing to improve our league table positions in a number of key course areas and that's down to the dedication, talent and creativity we have throughout our staff and student body."

Last month, Kingston University was named of one of the globe's top young universities by sector-leading publication the Times Higher Education (THE). The University also received the 2017 Guardian University Award for teaching excellence earlier this year.
