How do I choose a course?
When you're deciding which course might be right for you, consider:
- The subjects you enjoy and are good at
- The content of the course, which can differ between universities
- Which teaching methods might suit you best (e.g. exams, continuous assessment or project work)
- Whether you want to study part-time, on a joint honours course or complete a foundation programme
- What your career goals are and how a course might support them.

Part-time undergraduate courses
A part-time course is a flexible option if you want to combine your studies with other work or family commitments.
There are part-time opportunities for many of our:
- Arts, science, social science, technology and surveying courses
- Non-degree HND courses with a greater emphasis on practical skills
- Foundation degrees for science and technology
The modular structure of our courses means all classes take place during the day and part-time students study alongside full-time undergraduates. However, it usually takes six years to complete a part-time honours degree.
If you are unsure whether you will complete all six years of your part-time honours degree, you can:
- Take one or two modules before committing to the full award
- Gain a Certificate of Higher Education after one to two years of study
- Gain a Diploma of Higher Education after three to four years

Joint honours courses
Joint honours courses combine two different subjects. These could be closely related or from different areas.
This is an available option if you would like to choose more than one course as it allows you to keep your options open. It can also allow you to deepen your knowledge across more than one subject area.
How does a joint honours degree work?
Usually, you split your time equally between the two subjects. However, sometimes you may spend more time studying one subject (your major field) than the other (your minor field).
For most courses, you will study an equal number of modules for both of your chosen courses in your first year. You will then decide whether you wish to continue studying these equally (joint) or to major or minor in them for the rest of your degree.
Whichever route you choose, the total number of modules you take will be exactly the same as a single honours student.
Is it more difficult than a single honours degree?
No, you will work at exactly the same academic level as students on single honours programmes. You will simply study fewer modules from each subject area.
