Kingston University real estate management student shortlisted for prestigious Women in Property Award

A Kingston University student is following in the footsteps of her family in the real estate industry after being named a regional finalist in the 2022 National Student Awards, hosted by Women in Property.

Millie Fowler, a second year student on the Real Estate Management BSc (Hons) programme was put forward for the award by her lecturers after excelling on the course. She said she was inspired by her mother to get in to the trade. "My mum runs an estate agency, so I have always had a real connection to the industry," Millie said.

"I've done some work experience with my mum before, and I'm slowly becoming more involved and having more responsibilities within the business. Last month I sold my first house – which was a great achievement for me."

Women in Property is a network of women who focus on creating more opportunities for females in the sector. Kingston University real estate lecturer Ana Pedro emphasised the importance of the awards in creating a more inclusive environment. "Real estate remains a male dominated industry," she said. "So these awards are very important for recognising women's achievements in the sector and also to help encourage women to get into property," she added.

The course appealed to Millie because of the new vocational skills she would learn. "The course has taught me a lot of valuable skills and has really improved my confidence and my self-belief. The lecturers have been fantastic in teaching us all the details we need to know to succeed in the property industry and they've been so important in putting me forward for this award" she added.

Millie was the highest performing female student on the real estate management programme during the 2020/21 academic year. After being nominated by her lecturer, Millie progressed to the next stage where she was interviewed by a panel of industry experts and had to deliver a presentation. Millie then advanced to the regional finals which take place in June. "It has been a huge achievement for me to get this far and I'm really honored to be recognised by Women in Property. To go on and be one of the ten regional finalists and possibly win the whole competition is something that would mean so much to me," she said.

Ms Pedro has been a senior real estate lecturer at Kingston University for more than 15 years during which time several Kingston students have taken part in the awards. "The National Student Awards have been going for over a decade and we've been lucky enough to have one winner from Kingston in the past as well as a number of finalists," she said. "I'm wishing Millie the best of luck in the awards because she is very knowledgeable and up for the challenge."

Millie is looking to secure an internship with an estate agents this summer before completing the final year of her degree. After the regional finals in June – where the top 10 students nationally are selected and awarded a prize of £500 – the grand final winner will be chosen in September.
