Planning your day

Here is a step-by-step guide to your graduation day. It has everything you need to help you plan, so you can relax and enjoy your day. There will be staff and signs on hand at all venues to answer your questions on the day and help you find your way.

  • What happens where?
  • Here are the three venues for your graduation day:

    • The Guildhall for ticket collection, gowning and photography (The Guildhall, 2 High Street, Kingston Upon Thames KT1 1EU)
    • The Rose Theatre for your ceremony (Rose Theatre, 24–26 High Street, Kingston upon Thames KT11HL)
    • Town House for your ceremony reception (Kingston University, Penrhyn Road, Kingston upon Thames KT1 2EE)

All three venues are located in Kingston town centre and are within walking distance from each other. Visit our directions to Kingston University section for information on getting here by public transport and car.

Please note none of our venues have parking, please visit the Royal Borough of Kingston website to find information about car park locations and charges. The Bittoms and Rose car parks are the closest to the venues.

    Access

We have noted your mobility requirements at the time of booking, if these have changed at all please email educationhons@kingston.ac.uk.

All our graduation venues have lifts and can accommodate wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties. Please make yourself known to a member of staff when you arrive if you require assistance.

  • When should I arrive?
  • Registration opens at 8am. Please go to The Guildhall first to collect your pre-booked tickets, pick up your gown and then head to the photo studios to have official photographs taken.

  • Where should I collect my gown?
  • Please collect your gown at least 1 hour before your ceremony start time. Only graduates (and carers) are allowed in the gowning area but there is a waiting area for guests nearby.

    Location: The Guildhall from 8am

Scroll down to the section below on ‘Dress code and gown hire' for information on how to hire a gown, hood and hat.

  • Graduation photography
  • Before your ceremony starts the graduation photographers, Tempest, will be ready to take a photo of you in your gown, hood and hat. There is no need to book or pay in advance, just turn up once you have collected your gown.

    Location: The Guildhall from 8am

You can view packs and prices on the Tempest website at a later date. Choose ‘Kingston University' from the drop-down menu, choose the date of your ceremony and click enter.

  • General photography
  • Your guests can also take cameras and camcorders in the Rose Theatre main auditorium and take pictures during the ceremony and reception.

Please note graduates and guests who attend Kingston University graduation ceremonies give their consent to the recording and transmission of their images (still and moving) for Kingston University publicity purposes.

  • Can I buy extra guest tickets?
  • Extra guest tickets will be available to purchase on the day of your ceremony for £27 at the information desk on the ground floor of the Rose Theatre.

Location: Rose Theatre (near the café) between 8.30am - 9.30am

You can bring a child over the age of 11 as your guest to the Honorary Degree ceremony at the Rose Theatre, but he/she will need a guest ticket, which will be charged at the standard guest ticket price of £27.

  • The ceremony
  • Doors for the Rose Theatre main auditorium open at 9.30am. This is to allow time for you and your guests to be seated comfortably in the main auditorium. The ceremony will start promptly at 10am and is expected to last one hour.

Location: Rose Theatre main auditorium at 9.30am

You will be seated with your guest (pre-booked ticket) and as closely as possible with the rest of your class group. After the welcome speeches, the master of ceremonies will ask everyone from your class group to stand (or raise their hand). The master of ceremonies will then read out the name of each person in the group receiving an Honorary Degree in Education - followed by a collective applause! This will be repeated for each class group. You will not be required to walk across the stage.

Please note: It will not be possible to seat you with guests who buy tickets on the day.

  • What happens after the ceremony?
  • Town House celebration reception

Join us at the Town House after your graduation for a light buffet and mingle with your fellow honorary graduates. It's approximately a 10-to-15-minute walk from the Rose Theatre to the Town House.

Location: Town House, Penrhyn Road campus between 11.30am and 1pm

Kingston Hill (Gipsy Hill!) campus tours

Kingston Hill tours will run at 1.30pm, 2pm and 2.30pm. Each tour will be led by a current Kingston University student and last approximately 30 minutes, followed by tea and coffee in Kenry House. You can catch the Kingston University bus outside the Town House to Kingston Hill campus and take the bus back to the Town House.

Please note: You can drive to Kingston Hill campus after the Town House reception. However, we will need you to email educationhons@kingston.ac.uk your name and car license number, by Thursday 5 January 2023 to ensure you do not incur a parking charge.

Location: Kingston Hill campus, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey KT2 7LB, between 1.30pm – 3.30pm

  • Dress code and gown hire
  • Graduations are friendly rather than formal, but as it's a special occasion, most people go smartly dressed. We hope that all honorary graduates will want to wear formal ‘academic dress' (gown, hood and hat) for the occasion, but it's not compulsory.

The Graduate Gowning company (GGC) supplies all of Kingston University's academic dress. It costs £45 if you book your robe hire in advance or £50 if you hire your gown on the day at the ceremony venue. The prices include gown, hood and hat hire for the day. If you want to keep your hat as a memento, you can buy the hat for £10 on the day of your ceremony.

To book your robe hire please visit the Kingston University dedicated ordering site, enter your unique gown code/student number (you should have received this in your ‘Planning your day' email) and follow the on-screen instructions. The deadline to order your gown is Thursday 5 January 2023.

If you have not received your unique gown code please contact us on educationhons@kingston.ac.uk.

If you need any further assistance, contact the GGC on info@graduategowning.co.uk or 01736 751855.

Please drop-off your gown, hood and hat at The Guildhall or Town House on the day before 7.30pm.

  • I am no longer able to attend. What should I do?
  • If you are unable to attend your ceremony, please email the Kingston Alumni team on educationhons@kingston.ac.uk

  • Am I eligible to receive an Honorary Degree?
  • You are eligible for an Honorary Degree in Education from Kingston University if you left Gipsy Hill College or Kingston Polytechnic before 1979 with a Certificate in Education (Cert Ed).

We reserve the right to check and verify bookings to the ceremony and applications for receiving Honorary Degree certificates from Kingston University. At the point of booking, or shortly afterwards, we may ask for evidence of your original Certificate in Education award or further evidence of attendance.

We know that over time, documents will be misplaced; however, Kingston University is not able to supply replacements or copies of original documents and certificates to alumni who achieved awards prior to 1992.

Due to the exceptional nature of the past two years, we are able to award Honorary Degree certificates posthumously from 1 January 2020.

  • What name will be printed on my certificate?
  • Please email your name as you would like it to appear on your certificate. So, if you have changed your name since studying at Gipsy Hill, just enter the name you prefer to be on your certificate. • Samantha Smith
    • Samantha Jones

Please note we will not include titles on your certificate (Mr, Mrs, Ms or others).
