  • Module code: LS4100
  • Year: 2018/9
  • Level: 4
  • Credits: 0
  • Pre-requisites: None
  • Co-requisites: All level 4 modules of BSc (Hons) Biochemistry or BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences programmes

Summary

This is a non-credit-bearing module for students studying BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences which must be passed in order to achieve a degree accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. It is designed to record satisfactory completion of a range of key practical laboratory skills and to provide a record of a student's achievement of competence in such skills. Students will receive a portfolio record of their competence at the end of the year to demonstrate their experience to future employers.

Aims

  • To ensure students achieve a minimum level of technical competence in key laboratory skills
  • To provide a record of achievement of competence in key laboratory skills
  • To ensure students can demonstrate good laboratory practice and knowledge of health and safety requirements in the laboratory.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate good laboratory practice and an understanding of COSHH regulations and practice;
  • Carry out a range of key laboratory skills appropriate to the level confidently, competently, safely and accurately.

Curriculum content

Generic skills (both degrees)

  • Pipetting accurately and precisely (glass and Gilson)
  • Accurate weighing with balances
  • Preparation of basic solutions
  • Dilutions
  • Colorimetry
  • Basic statistical analysis of data
  • Light microscopy
  • Basic staining techniques
  • Basic microbiological techniques (inoculation and purity plating)
  • Aseptic techniques
  • Correct disposal of waste material
  • For Biochemists: Volumetric use
  • Filtration (under gravity and vacuum)
  • Recrystallisation of organic and inorganic molecules
  • Accurate determination of melting points
  • Separation techniques (liquid/liquid)

Teaching and learning strategy

Guidance and instruction for all techniques will be provided in laboratory classes and tutorials in the credit-bearing modules that comprise level 4 of the student's programme of study.

Assessment strategy

Assessment for this module is on a pass/fail basis and it will not be graded.  Assessment may be via direct observation during a laboratory class of performance of the key techniques and/or attendance at a timetabled lab session where students will be observed in objective structured practical exam (OSPE) style situations.  Students will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on a 'failed' observation and provided with an immediate reassessment opportunity to rectify the deficiency as well as a further opportunity, if needed, for reassessment in the summer. To pass the module, a student must satisfactorily complete 75% of the identified techniques.

Achieving a pass

It IS a requirement that the major element of assessment is passed in order to achieve an overall pass for the module. This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis. To pass the module, 75% of the key skills identified must be completed satisfactorily. The module must be passed to be awarded a degree accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. If the module is failed, a student is not normally permitted to repeat the module in a subsequent year unless exceptional circumstances beyond a student's control require reassessment in all level 4 modules.

Bibliography core texts

Relevant guidance, instruction and reading will be provided in the credit-bearing modules comprising the student's programme of study at level 4 and/or at the point of OSCE-style observation sessions.
