Summary

This module facilitates your knowledge and understanding in relation to the pathophysiological aspects of childbirth to enable you to provide care for women with complex health needs during childbirth and for women and families when complications arise.

Aims

  • Recognise actual or potential complications that occur during childbirth and assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate care for women and their families.
  • Collaborate effectively with the multi-disciplinary team and contribute to providing care for women and their families with complex needs.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Critically analyse the effects of medical disorders during pregnancy and the midwife's role in providing care.
  • Critically analyse the effects of pathophysiology on pregnancy, labour and the puerperium and appropriate midwifery care. 
  • Discuss critically the pathophysiology underlying obstetric and neonatal emergencies and appropriate management.
  • Critically appraise current research/ reports and recommendations in relation to pathophysiological aspects of childbirth and the implications for midwifery practice.
  • Explore and critically discuss professional issues and dilemmas which may arise when complications occur
  • Recognise the need to refer to other professionals when complications arise

Teaching and learning strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be utilised within this module. The use of lead lectures, time for directed reading, discussions and seminars will enable students to explore topics in depth. Study space will be used to support the teaching and learning, relevant materials will be available within the module including power point presentations and other E-learning materials.

Present a draft care plan based on a choice of summative scenarios, reviewed by personal tutor

Formative Assessment of practice through OSCE

Summative assessment

Care Plan and Essay (2000 words) (50%)

The assessment will be based on a choice of one of two scenarios prepared by the module leader. A plan of care (to be placed as an appendix and read in conjunction with the essay) will be devised by the student along with a 2000 word supporting essay with reference to the evidence which critically discusses the plan of care.
