Research project: The effect of climate change on non-bank firms' risk profile

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a significant rise in public awareness surrounding climate change, particularly following the Paris Agreement, which urges countries to actively tackle and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Various studies have delved into the potential impact of climate change not only on ecological systems and public health but also on economic and financial systems. Simultaneously, companies have placed a greater emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance metrics, prompting extensive scholarly and expert examination.

Despite the existing body of literature examining the intersection of climate change and environmental disclosure scores, along with their associated risks, and opportunities within financial systems at the national, sectoral, and corporate levels, there remain certain aspects that necessitate more in-depth investigation. My research is focused on employing advanced quantitative methods to explore how sustainability influences the risk profiles of firms. This involves analysing data collected from various databases such as LSEG (Refinitiv) and Bloomberg through statistical software, requiring proficiency in advanced tools like of advanced Excel, SPSS, Stata, and others.

Biography

Graduating in Polymer Engineering in 2011 marked my initial entry into the realm of sustainability. During that period, I acquired practical experience through a research project focused on the recycling of Polyethylene. Subsequently, I made a transition into the field of Finance, amassing nearly 11 years of expertise as a seasoned financial advisor and stock trader in Iran's capital market. My primary responsibilities were advising companies seeking listing on the stock market and going IPO, requiring to investigation and analysing companies, from a boarder perspective. This journey deepened my understanding of corporate finance, risk management and financial modelling. In pursuit of continuous growth, I completed my first master's degree in financial management in 2019. Seeking international exposure and embracing new horizons, I relocated to the UK, where, in 2023, I achieved distinction in my second master's degree in Investment and Financial Risk Management at Kingston University London. This academic endeavour not only sparked my passion for research, particularly at the intersection of finance and sustainability, but also resulted in being granted a fully funded scholarship from Kingston University, enabling me to further pursue my interest at an advanced level.  As a research student, I am eager to delve deeper into this crucial field, aspiring to enhance our understanding of how sustainability and ESG disclosure and performance influence and shape corporate risk.
