Dr Andrea Cockett

About

I am the Deputy Head of School and Programme Lead for all pre-registration courses in the School of Nursing. I have over 20 years' experience in higher education and have undertaken a variety of roles in different institutions including head of department and programme leadership. I am a Doctor of Education and my research interests are focused on assessment and feedback in higher education with a focus on nursing students. My professional background is in children's nursing and I have worked primarily in children's intensive and palliative care settings. 

I am passionate about supporting students to be successful on their programme of study and have developed extensive student resources to support the development of academic literacy for nursing students. My recent projects include: the implementation of reading groups to support students with their critical reading skills, the development and evaluation of at ‘Labs at Home' project to support the acquisition of clinical skills and the use of a student practicum to support practice learning during the Covid 19 pandemic. My recent publications and conference presentations have been focused on assessment and feedback for nursing students and children's nursing.

Teaching and learning

I am a highly experienced educator and have in depth expertise in healthcare education. My teaching and learning activities have been focused on teaching primarily children's nursing and more recently on the development of academic literacy for healthcare students. 

I have expertise in programme management at both undergraduate and post graduate level and have taught across a range of programmes.

My international expertise has been in China where I have been involved in a project to support the development of degree level nursing programmes in the province of Nanjing. This involved in country work supporting staff development and the development of programme materials.

I have led university wide projects to embed assessment for learning and to support the development of assessment strategy that reflects current pedagogical research. I am used to working collaboratively across institutions and co-creating strategy with students.
