Education BA (Hons) (with optional QTS year)

Why choose this course?

This unique course provides an interesting and thought-provoking opportunity for you to study and experience the diverse discipline of education. It enables you to develop skills for the workplace while you explore options for your future career. In your third year, you will have the option of training to become a teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will develop a deep understanding of the school curriculum, complete 120 days of school placements and acquire a range of teaching methods, based upon the latest research in education.

Depending on the pathway you choose, you will graduate with one of the following:

  • BA(Hons) Education
  • BA(Hons) Education with Primary Teaching
  • BA(Hons) Education with Early Years Teaching (aged 3 - 7)
  • BA(Hons) Education with Secondary Teaching (subject to availability and qualifications)

All students will gain fieldwork experience in a range of educational settings, experiencing first-hand the interface between theory, research and practice. These settings may include outdoor learning, creative arts learning, museum education, traveller education, virtual learning education, school liaison and early years.

There will be opportunities for you to pursue your own interests within the field of education as you undertake a variety of assessments, which will draw on your developing knowledge and understanding within different organisations and communities.

Core modules

Professional Development in Education

30 credits

This module introduces you to a range of learning theories and how these shape approaches to education. You will explore and draw on experiences of learning in an exciting and diverse range of environments. You will investigate a variety of learning strategies and consider the impact these can have on yourselves and others. You will have the opportunity to explore your preferred approaches and ways of working in a dynamic and collaborative learning environment whilst making links between theory and practice.

Safeguarding and Children's Rights

30 credits

This module will empower you to examine your professional identity within the wider discourse of safeguarding, child protection and children's rights. You will consider the universal values on the rights and responsibilities of the child and develop your own emerging professional position within this. Ethical issues will be unpacked, encouraging you to reflect on the issues surrounding safeguarding and child protection. Legislation, policy and codes of conduct will be explored to inform your thinking, understanding and developing professional practice within educational contexts. Theoretical perspectives that underpin approaches to safeguarding, child protection and promotion of children's rights will be explored. You will review appropriate working practices within the educational establishments that promote the well being and safety of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Historical, Social and Political Perspectives of Education

30 credits

This module gives you the opportunity to explore what is meant by education and the varied types of provision and curriculum approaches. It is an exciting opportunity for you to explore key influential historical, social and political perspectives that are evident in education. The module has been designed to enhance your skills in research and critical analysis, enabling you to make informed contributions to lively debates and discussions that recognise the diversity of education, curriculum and systems. You will also investigate influences that have shaped approaches within education, and how this impacts on practice within a range of settings. This will include your personal philosophy and position and how this affects your critical thinking and understanding.

Principles and Practice in Education (Field Trips)

30 credits

In this module you will be provided with the opportunity to visit a range of educational settings across teaching block 1 and teaching block 2. This will enable you to examine the diverse variety of educational provision in a number of different organisations. You will explore the philosophy, principles and practice that underpins the different educational contexts visited. In preparation for the visits you will investigate moral and ethical working practices in education to ensure understanding of behaviours in a professional context. You will explore the notion of the professional educator. This module has been designed to be complimentary to the module on safeguarding and children's rights that runs consecutively and explores educators' responsibilities when working with children and young people.

In Year 2, you will explore contemporary issues and international perspectives in education. You will also have the opportunity to experience an educational environment on a block placement.

Core modules

The Arts, Design and Creativity in Education

30 credits

This module encourages you to critically analyse what is understood by the term ‘creativity', and how it develops knowledge and understanding in and across the arts* and design. This is a practical module combining elements of theory and principles of creativity, and the therapeutic value of the arts, alongside opportunities for developing individual as well as collaborative expression. You will be encouraged to explore the key concepts of creativity and how these have manifested in a range of cultures, (for example youth subcultures), and through different historical, political, creative and aesthetic lenses. Through practical work and discussions in lectures, this module will enhance your skills in refining and articulating your personal definition of creativity and creative development. You will also have a chance to develop particular skills, knowledge and understanding in music, dance, drama, art, design and technology and will have the opportunity to combine these in the form of digital animation as a form of creative expression.

Contemporary Issues in Education

30 credits

In this module you will explore a range of contemporary key issues within education and consider the impact these have on practice. In addition to legislation and theoretical perspectives a broad range of current issues that have been highlighted within the media will be explored and debated. Current research will be examined, giving you the opportunity to critique how they influence thinking, understanding and working practices in a variety of contexts. This will enable you to develop a deeper understanding of key issues and consider how these shape personal and professional approaches within education practice.

International Perspectives in Education

30 credits

This module will explore a range of international pedagogical approaches, giving you an opportunity to compare and contrast key issues to the English education system. You will consider the impact of international testing systems and benchmarking approaches on educational practices within the global context. There will be the opportunity to explore a range of theoretical approaches regarding leadership and how it impacts on education within an international framework. You will also consider the factors that contribute or hinder the international and intercultural dimensions of education and worldwide mobility.

Education Field Work

30 credits

In this module you will have the opportunity to experience an educational environment on a block placement. You will explore the philosophy, principles and practice that underpins your selected educational setting and how this shapes teaching and learning strategies. In preparation for the visits you will investigate professional codes of practice in education to ensure understanding of the expectations and behaviours in a professional context. You will also explore data collecting methods which will enable you to gather information to inform your knowledge and understanding of specific roles and how these influence practice and professional approaches within your placement. This module has been designed to be complimentary to contemporary issues in education.

In Year 3, you will have the option to train as a teacher and gain Qualified Teacher Status. All students will learn about educating for citizenship, choose an educational setting for placement and conduct your own educational project, working collaboratively with others.

Core module

Educating for Citizenship

30 credits

This module explores the aims and purposes of educating for citizenship and the approaches and sites of this in societies. You will be encouraged to explore the different aims of citizenship education, the concepts inherent in the area as well as the tensions between different proponents of education for citizenship. Your exploration of these concepts and how they apply to societal and global issues will in turn support your critical understanding and ability to articulate and challenge ideas related to how you position yourselves within others in society in differing contexts. You will also explore differing sites of citizenship education including schools, the work of community and citizens action groups, parliamentary and legal education services, and museums, galleries and archives. Using your learning, you will have the opportunity to ‘take action' through an educative project working with one of the sites investigated.

BA (Hons) Education Pathway

Extended Education Field Work

30 credits

In this module you will have the opportunity to self select an educational setting for a block placement. This is a student-led module that provides the opportunity to explore an area interest in education and potential career pathways. It enables you to build on the knowledge, skills and experiences acquired throughout the programme and explore how these can be applied effectively within an educational context. You will critically analyse and reflect in depth on the codes of practice, health and safety and safeguarding policies and procedures within your chosen educational setting and the impact on your professional practice. You will also explore ways to work effectively within a team, exploring leadership theories and paradigms that support and underpin constructive working practices.

Innovative Educational Project

60 credits

This module is student directed, providing you with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and understanding gained throughout the programme. Working collaboratively with your peers you will develop a project of your choice. This will require you to work as part of a collaborative learning group to plan, manage, develop and evaluate a relevant resource for the project. In the development process you will liaise with employers and other stakeholders to ensure the resource supports teaching and learning strategies. This resource will be applicable for a specific target group within an educational context.

BA (Hons) Education (Optional QTS pathway)

The Teaching Professional

30 credits

This module focuses its attention on the notions of being and becoming a professional in teaching. It explores concepts, theories and legislation that relate to Part 2 of the Teachers' Standards, which is concerned with a teacher's professional and personal conduct. The module is designed to enable critical exploration of factors influencing a teacher's identity in professional practice and how these might affect behaviours and attitudes both inside and outside of the working environment.

Professional Practice Learning

60 credits

This year-long module is focussed around knowledge and skills development in order for students to be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The professional practice learning module is defined by a blend of two major components; university based research informed theoretical elements and practically informed school experience elements. Students learn and progress their understanding of effective pedagogy and practice from experienced tutors in the university and alongside experienced professionals in practice. They are provided with dynamic insights and experiences of the nature of teaching and personal professional development.

The regulations governing this course are available on our website. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, this may not be offered.

Entry requirements

Typical offer 2020

The minimum requirement for entry for all types of Level 3 qualification is 112 UCAS points.

When you apply to us, we consider your full application, not just your Level 3 qualifications. If you have not achieved, or do not expect to achieve, the 112 UCAS points, you should still consider making an application.

A-levels/AS levels

  • Minimum of one B and one C grade (72 points) at A-level; the remaining points can be made up of A-level and AS grades. 
  • These should be in subjects relevant to the national curriculum. Please note that General Studies is not included.

International Baccalaureate

  • A minimum of 26 International Baccalaureate points

BTEC National Qualifications

  • Extended Diploma Grade DMM or above
  • Diploma Grade D*D*
  • Two extended certificates at grade D*

These should be in subjects relevant to the national curriculum or primary education.

Access to Higher Education Diploma

  • An accredited Access course with modules relevant to the national curriculum or primary education.
  • CACHE Level 3 Diploma in an area relevant to primary education will be considered.

UCAS tariff points: 112

Five GSCEs at grade C/4 including English, Mathematics and Science. Enhanced DBS check.

Additional requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (grade C or above for examinations taken before 2017) in English, mathematics, science and two other subjects.
  • If you do not have GCSEs in English, mathematics and science, you may take equivalency tests at the School of Education following acceptance of any potential offer given.
  • Satisfactory DBS check (this will be conducted following acceptance of any potential offer given).


Alternative routes

We will consider a range of other level 3 qualifications (Access Course, BTEC) that equate to 112 UCAS points.

Equivalency tests

If you do not meet the GCSE English, mathematics or science requirement, you will be pleased to know you can take equivalency tests at the School of Education (free of charge) following acceptance of any potential offer given for a teacher-training course.

Please note a pass in these tests is considered to be of the same standard as GCSE grade 4, however, it does not offer a formal GCSE qualification. Therefore, passing the test(s) will allow you to gain entry to a teacher-training course at Kingston University only and not any other course or training provider.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching and learning opportunities on the course are varied and stimulating, giving you the opportunity to develop your knowledge, understanding and higher level critical thinking skills. They include lectures, seminars, debates, presentations, fieldwork, collaborative learning groups with your peers and classroom discussions. Lectures and seminars are led by experienced lecturers and visiting speakers from the field of education.

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This typically will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for exams. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, the library and CANVAS, the online virtual learning platform.

A wide range of assessment methods are utilised throughout the course. Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm. For undergraduate students Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

Course fees and funding

2020/21 fees for this course

The tuition fee you pay depends on whether you are assessed as a 'Home' (UK or EU), 'Islands' or 'International' student. In 2020/21 the fees for this course are:

For courses with a sandwich year, the fee for the placement year can be viewed on the undergraduate fees table. The placement fee published is for the relevant academic year stated in the table. This fee is subject to annual increases but will not increase by more than the fee caps as prescribed by the Office for Students or such other replacing body.

* For full time programmes of a duration of more than one academic year, the published fee is an annual fee, payable each year, for the duration of the programme. Your annual tuition fees cover your first attempt at all of the modules necessary to complete that academic year. A re-study of any modules will incur additional charges calculated by the number of credits. Home/EU tuition fees may be subject to annual increases but will not increase by more than the fee caps as prescribed by the Office for Students or such other replacing body. Full time taught International fees are subject to an annual increase and are published in advance for the full duration of the programme.

Eligible UK and EU students can apply to the Government for a tuition loan, which is paid direct to the University. This has a low interest-rate which is charged from the time the first part of the loan is paid to the University until you have repaid it.

Additional costs

Depending on the programme of study, there may be extra costs which are not covered by tuition fees, which students will need to consider when planning their studies.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. Accommodation and living costs are not included in our fees.

Where a course has additional expenses, we make every effort to highlight them. These may include optional field trips, materials, security checks such as DBS, uniforms, specialist clothing or professional memberships.

Text books

Our libraries are a valuable resource with an extensive collection of books and journals as well as first-class facilities and IT equipment. You may prefer to, or be required to, buy your own copy of key textbooks.

Computer equipment

There are open-access networked computers available across the University, plus laptops available to loan. You may find it useful to have your own PC, laptop or tablet which you can use around campus and in halls of residences. Free WiFi is available on each of the campuses.


In the majority of cases coursework can be submitted online. There may be instances when you will be required to submit work in a printed format. Printing and photocopying costs are not included in your tuition fees.


Travel costs are not included but we do have a free inter-site bus service which links the campuses and halls of residence.

Note for EU students: UK withdrawal from the European Union

The Government has confirmed that EU students applying for places at universities in England in the 2020/21 academic year will be eligible for student loans and grants throughout their degree programmes.

The decision means they will be eligible for the same funding and support available to current EU students and the University will continue to charge at the 'home' fee rate.

These rights will continue for the full duration of their courses, even if the UK exits the European Union during that period.


The Kingston Hill campus features an outdoor learning environment where trainee teachers lead curriculum-linked natural sciences activities with children. It includes a specially built 'cubby house', outdoor pond, beehive and nature trail. It offers early years students the opportunity to simulate teaching and learning with natural materials.

There are a number of teaching rooms set up to replicate actual classrooms. Each classroom is subject based - such as an art room, science lab, and each is equipped with all the relevant facilities you will need to practise your lessons before taking them into school.

Our library (the Nightingale Centre) has an excellent range of teaching resources to help you plan and teach your lessons, such as a range of children's topic books, music and nursery rhymes on CD, as well as artefacts and kits that can be used to illustrate historical periods, different religions, science, maths and music.


After you graduate

This course is an excellent foundation for study at masters level. Options available at Kingston University include: Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Education Master of Research(MRes), Master of Social Work (MSW) and Nursing/Registered Nurse MSc, among others.

If you enter the workforce straight after graduation, the range of study and fieldwork experience you have gained on the course will have prepared you to effectively work with children and young people in a variety of settings.
