Dr Kitto will present an ethnographic study entitled 'Understanding the nature of team-based care and patient and family involvement in intensive care unit settings'. This study has used an innovative methodological approach, whereby multiple ethnographers are undertaking fieldwork in multiple ICU settings to gain a theoretically informed, in-depth understanding of the nature of interprofessional interactions and patient and family member involvement in patient care. This study is being conducted in four ICUs affiliated with three academic institutions located in the United States and Canada. The focus of this presentation will be the two participating Canadian ICUs.
Data collection began in January 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in December 2014, by which time it is anticipated that approximately 400 hours of observation, 30 semi-structured interviews with a range of clinicians, and 30 interviews with patients and/or family members of ICU patients will have been conducted across the two sites.
