‘The Past Bleeds into the Present': News, Journalism and History-Writing

Throughout much of western history, the relationship between history and journalism has been close - and sometimes contentious. To historians interested not only in past events but also in language, discourse and identity, journalism is rich in source material. For journalists, meanwhile, history offers a vital means of clarifying - and complicating - present-day world affairs.

At Kingston University, Brian Cathcart and Maurice Walsh are journalists who are also historians. Their most recent books focus, respectively, on the Battle of Waterloo and on revolutionary-era Ireland.

In this seminar they draw on their research and on their writing to examine the complicated relationship between history and journalism, and between past and present.

All welcome.
