Simon Morgan Wortham: Resistances of the Psycho-Political

Please join the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP) for their 2016/17 research series.

Recent reinvestments in the 'political' prospects of psychoanalysis, particularly Lacanianism, display a tendency to dismiss 'poststructuralism' (and any vestiges of a poststructuralist Lacan), as they sharpen distinctions between a materialism capable of addressing political issues and unwanted traces of a longstanding idealism, with which 'deconstruction' can now be historically aligned. This lecture assesses the dismissal of poststructuralism to be found in Žižek's recently published doctoral thesis, from 1982. The political implications of this dismissal, it argues, are far from simply 'progressive'. How is one to re-read Derrida's resistance to Lacan against the backdrop of such a dismissal of 'poststructuralism'?
