Strategy evolution and execution in the Red Cross: how we are building for impact

About the speaker

Mike Adamson has been Chief Executive of the British Red Cross since the end of 2014, responsible for all of the charity's work here in the UK and around the world. He has led the development and implementation of the organisation's new strategy "Refusing to ignore people in crisis" and the ongoing strategic change in the organisation and culture necessary to delivery.

Prior to his current appointment, Mike was Managing Director of Operations, responsible for the leadership of the British Red Cross' UK and international programmes and its advocacy work, overseeing a unified approach to all operations. This is his second period with the Red Cross having previously held several other leadership positions in the organisation between 1992 and 2003 in international programming, UK services and strategy development.

In his years away from the organisation, Mike worked for the National Health Service as Director of Commissioning and Primary Care at a Primary Care Trust in Gloucestershire for three years, and spent five years as Managing Director for Services at the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID – now Action on Hearing Loss). Prior to this he was a commercial management consultant.

In addition, Mike serves on the board of the Disasters, Emergencies Committee and the Prevention Board for the NHS Five Year Forward View. He has recently chaired a charity sector-wide working group on how we should recalibrate the relationships between charities and their donors.

Mike has an MPhil in economics from Oxford University and an MBA with distinction from Kingston University.
