Relationship between loan managers at Chinese banks and SME owner-managers

Abstract

The paper explores the relationship between loan managers at Chinese banks and SME owner-managers. Essentially, we discuss the question: in a situation where accounting information is widely disbelieved, on what basis does the commercial relationship between the two parties rest? This, in turn, raises a number of further questions, such as how deeply instrumental financial logics are embedded into traditional cultural mores, and how different forms of accountability are managed in such contexts.
