The Big Read Book Club - Week 3: Is social justice a necessity or a luxury?

This summer Kingston University wants to keep the Kingston community connected, from new students to alumni and everyone in between. We will be hosting our first-ever series of virtual Book Club meetings, centred around the 2020 Big Read Airhead, written by Newsnight host Emily Maitlis. You'll get to see the chapters of Airhead through the eyes of KU experts in weekly virtual talks from 8 July to 16 September 2020 - a chance you won't want to miss.

This is the third Big Read Book Club talk, and will be focusing on the chapter titled The umbrella movement: Hong Kong (p.48).

This week's discussion will focus on the universal topic of social justice, using Emily Maitlis' chapter on the 2014 Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong as a case study. The Umbrella Movement saw tens of thousands of individuals, including many students, take to the streets to protest changes to the electoral system. Dr Josh Bullock and Dr Max Morris will examine the topic of whom social justice is -and should be -for.

Please note, booking closes at 3pm the day before the event.

Booking is essential to attend this event.
