Land abandoned to the sea: the managed realignment of coastal areas

Abstract: The seminar examines the issue of 'managed realignment', the organised abandonment of the coast, and outlines some of the main themes of the book Land Abandoned to the Sea (IB Tauris, 2021). It explores the origins of managed realignment, its purpose and effects, and the opportunities it offers for society 'learning to live with nature not defeat her'.

Who this talk is aimed at: Staff, students and members of the public who are interested in environmental and social issues, particularly in relation to sustainability, rivers and the coast.

Biography: Stuart Oliver is Senior Lecturer in Geography at St Mary's University, Twickenham, and Visiting Lecturer at Kingston. He has published on the political ecology of environmental hazards, nature in modernity, and contemporary sustainabilities. His previous book was Chains on the River': The Thames Embankments and the Construction of Nature (Historical Geography Research Group, 2002).
