Research project: The impact of nutrition on sleep in people with an intellectual disability

Abstract

People with intellectual disabilities are more likely to have sleep problems than people who do not have intellectual disabilities. Poor sleep can have negative impacts on an individual's physical and mental health, their quality of life, and poor sleep also negatively impacts their family or carers. Behavioural, lifestyle and pharmacological interventions have been used to improve sleep in people with intellectual disabilities. Evidence from studies conducted in the general population has found that nutrients such as vitamin D and melatonin rich foods may be beneficial for sleep.  However, limited rigorous research is available on the impact of nutritional interventions to improve sleep in people with intellectual disabilities. A mixed method research protocol is proposed that uses an exploratory research design to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of using nutritional intervention to improve sleep in people with specific intellectual disability syndromes.
