Professor Ann Ooms

About

I am Professor of Higher Education Research, School Director of Research and Enterprise, and founder of the Healthcare Education Research and Evaluation (HERE) Research Group.

I hold a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota, USA, focusing on Educational Research and Evaluation Methods. My MA in Educational Psychology, also from the University of Minnesota, focused on Educational Technology.

My specialty is research and evaluation in higher education and healthcare education. I also conduct research/evaluations on healthcare interventions and professional development and well-being of healthcare professionals. These projects, most funded by research grants, have resulted in over 40 publications in research journals and a wide range of national and international conference presentations.

Over the years, I obtained research grants and scholarships and received prestigious awards, such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Outstanding PhD Dissertation award, the Research Excellence Award at the University of Minnesota and the Kingston University Recognition of Achievement Award.

As Director of Research and Enterprise at the School of Nursing (+/- 90 academics), I have developed a strategy that aims to create an effective research culture and increase research capacity, research income and research productivity.

I lecture Research Methods and apply adult learning theories in my pedagogical approaches. Currently, I am supervising 6 PhD students and have successfully supervised 3 PhD students through completion.

I am Associate Editor for the International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches and reviewer for a range of research journals. I am also a conference committee member (HKAECT) and reviewer for research conferences in the UK (BERA), USA (AERA), and Hong Kong (HKAECT). In addition, I am a member of Kingston University Peer Review College.

I have lived and worked in three countries (Belgium, USA, England) and am fluent in three languages (English, Dutch and French).

Teaching and learning

I have a range of teaching qualifications and have been involved in teaching at secondary and higher education levels since 1998 in three different countries, namely in Belgium, in the USA and in the UK. These experiences have contributed to my development as a teacher who is sensitive to the needs of adult learners from diverse backgrounds and ages and I apply adult learning theories in my pedagogical approaches.

I have three strands to my teaching: 1) academics, 2) healthcare professionals, and 3) university Post Graduate students.

My involvement in the professional development of academics aims at improving the quality of teaching, learning and assessment practices through mentoring and teaching colleagues to undertake educational research projects. My work, which has made a significant contribution to teaching that enhances the student experience, has led to an increase in reflection on pedagogical practices and changes in how we deliver challenging content, teach healthcare skills and provide support to our diverse student body.

As Director of Research and Enterprise, I have developed a strategy which aims to build research capacity among colleagues at the School of Nursing (+/- 90 academics), and enhance the quality and quantity of conference presentations and publications, research impact and research grants. The strategy includes a range of professional development opportunities for colleagues.

In addition to working with academics within the university, I also engage in professional development activities with healthcare professionals to enhance their research and evaluation knowledge, skills and experience.

My subject matter expertise is research methods and I teach across the Faculty's Post Graduate portfolio (MSc, MRes, EdD, PhD).  My students come from a range of clinical disciplines, such as nurses, allied health professionals, midwifes, and doctors.

Since September 2020, I am leading the Research LTA (Learning Teaching and Assessment) subject-matter development at the School of Nursing. I am currently undertaking a scoping exercise which will form the foundation for future developments.
