Research project: Behaviour of novel FRP Structural element RC Column Internally Reinforced with FRP under axial loading

Abstract

This study consist construction of large-scale testing on internally reinforced columns with BFRP, CFRP and GFRP longitudinal bars and GFRP transverse reinforcement are presented. A total of 25 samples were prepared and tested under concentric loading and their performance in terms of lateral and axial deformation, strain development, stiffness and ultimate load is analysed and compared. Seven samples were reinforced with steel and the remaining eighteen samples were reinforced with either BFRP, CFRP and GFRP longitudinal bars and GFRP transverse reinforcement. The main variable of the experiment was different types of FRP longitudinal bars and spacing of transverse reinforcement. It was found that the performance of the BFRP, CFRP and GFRP reinforced concrete columns was similar to those of steel control samples. Although the steel samples displayed higher ultimate load; the BFRP, CFRP and  GFRP samples displayed higher stiffens throughout testing. The experimental findings were then compared with predictions of the code with ACI codes and other numerical approaches. A good correspondence between the experimental results and the design codes was observed.

Biography

I hold a bachelors degree BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering from Kingston University and a masters degree MSc in Transportation Engineering from University of East London (UEL). Currently, I am at the final stages of my PhD in Kingston University. My research topic is related to the use of FRP as internal reinforcement in RC columns.

I have worked on a number of large-scale projects as a Site Engineer. Currently, I am involved in teaching undergraduate students at Kingston University, primarily focusing on lab and tutorial sessions.
