Course information

Course description

Foundation Preparation Extended 2-week course develops visual, practical, and technical skills to give you the framework to build a varied collection of work that demonstrates your strengths, creativity and interests. Over ten days, you will be led through a series of structures, workshops and short projects, to help you become confident in fundamental aspects of all Foundation specialisms, including drawing, idea generation, visual research, thinking through making, and collective discussion.

The course is taught by experienced tutors from across the four Foundation specialisms (Visual Communication, 3D Design, Fashion & Fabrication, and Fine Art) and is a thorough introduction to our approach, ethos, and studio culture. We will work through a range of conceptual, research-driven and materials-focused processes and activities that will enable you to articulate your ideas, document them, and present them clearly and concisely. Experienced Foundation tutors will demonstrate how skills learnt can be applied to projects outside of this short course, and to select work for applications and portfolios. The course ends with a collective showcase of work produced across the two weeks in our Foundation studios.

Example course structure

  • Week 1: Work Out! - This first week introduces students to a broad range of conceptual and visual tools and processes that introduce the KSA Foundation ethos. Participants will engage with a wide range of source material, gaining confidence in responding conceptually, iteratively and individually. This week participants will explore drawing, publication, model making, and performance in both two and 3 dimensions.
  • Week 2: Capture and Move - Kicking off with drawing on location, participants will investigate how to record and respond to the world around them. Applying and building on skills developed the previous week participants will develop an informed and individual body of work inspired by their time on location; challenging methods of drawing, print processes and animation. The week will culminate with participants collating and curating work produced over the 2 weeks as well as an opportunity for a dedicated Q+A session about KSA Foundation.
