Strategy into Practice: The relevance of accountancy and accounting standards to the economy

We are delighted to welcome the president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Martyn Jones (PDF), to Kingston Business School for the next in our series of Strategy into Practice lectures.

Martyn has had a distinguished career which has included providing insights to 10 Downing Street on the on-going concern issues during the financial meltdown. His career has seen him work in a medium-sized firm and an international practice and then became a lecturer, Secretary of the Auditing Practices Committee responsible for developing the auditing standards and guidelines in the UK and Ireland, serving as an adviser to the International Auditing Practices Committee and a senior technical partner in Deloitte LLP.

His partner roles included risk management, audit methodology at the global level, service innovation, expert witness work, public policy, the development of director skills and knowledge via the Deloitte Academy, chairing the firm's corporate governance services group and chairing its quality group on assurance reporting on sustainability disclosures. He also provided advisory services to a number of well-known companies, financial institutions and mutual and to the House of Commons and to the House of Lords.

For many years Martyn represented Deloitte LLP on the prestigious CBI Companies Committee. Martyn has also chaired the ICAEW's ethics standards committee and the ethics group of the UK and Irish Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies. He has also worked on projects with the World Economic Forum and provided insights to Downing Street on the going concern issues during the financial meltdown. He has also provided training to directors in the public sector on behalf of HM Treasury and the Cabinet Office.

Martyn chairs the ICAEW working group and stake-holders panel which develop the guidance on assurance reporting on investment management activities including stewardship reporting.

He believes strongly in the key role of chartered accountants in promoting the success of the private sector side of the economy and in providing wide social access to the professions. He provides insights to young people at some leading universities on the behavioural skills needed to succeed in business and acts as an adviser and consultant on public policy and governance issues.

Booking is essential to attend this event.
