Dr Alexia Coke

Lecturer in Sustainable Development Geographies

About

Before taking up a career in academia, I worked for over ten years in international development, focused in particular on sustainable livelihoods. This included being Research Director for the Kabul-based policy and practice think tank, the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit, and the Sustainable Livelihoods Programme Adviser at Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO).  I have also been a Policy and Research Manager for the British Institute of Human Rights.

My doctoral thesis explored the emerging strategies of the Transition movement to bring about a low carbon future, as part of a broader research programme on lifestyles, values and the environment (RESOLVE). Since then, I have held research positions both at Surrey University and University College London, as part of CRISP (creating innovative sustainability pathways), REDUCE (reshaping energy demand of users by communication technology and economic incentives) and a CDKN project on greening industrialisation in Ethiopia. I joined Kingston University's Geography and Geology Department in October 2015.
