Dr Tim Ewers

Associate Professor of Music

About

My academic career started in 1982 at Goldsmiths' College when asked to take on some part time teaching on completing my MMus in Composition. I continued to work at Goldsmiths' until 1995 and was also active as a composer, oboist and director of the Varese Ensemble, a group specialising in performing contemporary classical music. I completed my doctorate (AMusD) at Nottingham in 1995 and began working at Kingston, as research assistant on a peer assessment in composition project. In 2002 I was offered a fractional post at Kingston and was made full time in 2005 when I became academic mentor to AHRC Research Fellow in Performing Arts, Jane Manning. From 2010-2014 I served as Director of Studies for Music and in 2015 was awarded Senior Fellowship of the HEA and promoted to Associate Professor. My current position is Course Leader for Taught Postgraduate courses in Music.

Research

My research consists of composition and the philosophical study of musical composition and performance. The compositions are disseminated through commercially released CDs on the Guild label, a DVD on the FMR label, publication of scores by Elysian Edition and Forward Contemporary Music Ltd and by public performances and broadcasts. Papers have been delivered on The Epistemology of Composition, The Development of an Ontological Model for Musical Composition and, with Jason Piper, Contamination, Purity and Ownership: Collaborative Interactions between Dance and Music.

Current projects:

1) The Extended Piano, reinventing the piano for the 21st century with Kate Ryder. Grants received from Creative Works, London and RVW Trust. Further grants applications submitted to AHRC and Arts Council.

2) The Soprano Trombone, exploring the potential of this rare but beautiful instrument with Torbjorn Hultmark. Composing new repertoire and recording a CD of it for the Guild label. Funding bids submitted to the Arts Council of England.

3) Hurrian Hymn no. 6, reimagining the oldest discovered piece of notated music in collage and context. This is a collaboration between a team of 6 composers from around the world led by Warwick Blair from New Zealand and British Museum scholar, Richard Dumbrill. An AHRC application is in preparation.
