Mandarin (Chinese)

Our Mandarin modules will be taught face-to-face at Penrhyn Road.

At the end of each semester-long module, there will be two assessments: In-class (at Penrhyn Road) Reading & Writing and an online Oral Assessment.

Please note: KLS assessments cannot be rescheduled.

Please also note: a minimum of 10 students is required in order for a course to run. Should any course not recruit enough students, it will be cancelled.

Mandarin courses offered

Mandarin Level 1

This course is for absolute beginners. It aims to give learners a basic knowledge of reading, listening, spoken and written skills in a dynamic and communicative way, through individual, pair and group work and studio-based and authentic texts. The focus is on accuracy as well as communication.

  • Entry requirements: None
  • Level 1 module is offered in October 2023 and January 2024
  • Method of delivery: face-to-face
  • Timetable for January course: Thursdays, 6-8pm

Mandarin Level 2

This module is designed to provide near-beginners with the foreign language skills to enable them to interact satisfactorily in survival situations and social encounters in the foreign country and to be aware of related aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

  • Entry requirements: completion of Level 1 or three months' prior language learning
  • Level 2 module is offered in October 2023 and January 2024
  • Method of delivery: face-to-face
  • Timetable for January course: Tuesdays, 6-8pm

Mandarin Level 3

This course is designed to develop the language competency already acquired by students. It focuses on developing the levels of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Students will improve and consolidate the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary acquired previously. The module also engages with aspects of the language's culture and society as it aims to provide students with a wider context for language learning.

  • Entry requirements: completion of Level 2 or six months' prior language learning
  • Level 3 module is offered in January 2024
  • Method of delivery: face-to-face at Penrhyn Road
  • Timetable for January course: Tuesdays, 4-6pm

Teaching Block 1 (semester 1):

  • Week commencing 9 October 2023 to week commencing 11 December 2023 (10 weeks).

Teaching Block 2 (semester 2):

  • Week commencing 22 January 2024 to week commencing 25 March 2024 (10 weeks).

Course fees

  • Kingston University students: free. (You will be required to purchase the course textbook independently at the beginning of the course. Your tutor will provide details in the first class).
  • Members of the public: £225 per semester or £420 for two semesters.
  • Kingston University alumni: £210 per semester or £400 for two semesters.
  • Kingston University staff: £80 per semester.
