Help your students enhance their understanding of history with the professional and research experience of our highly rated academic staff.
Our history activities are primarily aimed at Year 12 students who may be considering further study in this area or a related subject.
The following sessions can be delivered either in school/college or at Kingston University (please specify at booking which you prefer):
Studying history at university
- Year group: Year 12
- Date and time: Various dates, approximately 1 hour
Take a look at the options available to those with an interest in studying history and find out where it can lead. Learn about the different module options offered to students and the ability to combine with other areas of study. This talk also gives an introduction to the type of learning done at university including the lecture/seminar structure, preparation for seminars and the use of study materials. Where possible students will also have the opportunity to put their questions to a current history student at Kingston.
Model lecture and seminar
- Year group: Year 12
- Date and time: Various dates, two 1.5 hour sessions
This is run over two sessions:
- Session A: A computer-based session that looks at websites which enable the annotation of electronic primary source materials. In preparation for the seminar in session B, students are tasked with making notes on a case taken from the Old Bailey website; whilst in preparation for the lecture they will be shown alternative methods of note-making.
- Session B: Students attend a lecture and seminar session (on a topic to be agreed) as they would be delivered to university students. This provides invaluable experience of note-making and synthesis of materials both from the lecture itself and from their own background reading on the subject. The model seminar provides the opportunity for a small-group exploration of primary source material and a further discussion of the topic, usually based around a short activity.
