Kingston Design 2012 is a collaboration between the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Kingston University's Design School and funded by Deborah Lock of Enterprise Support. It celebrates the year of the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and showcases the best of UK new design.
Three waiting rooms in the BIS Ministry building on London's Victoria Street will show work from the disciplines of illustration and animation, graphic design, fashion and product design. The display will be enjoyed by the Department's VIP visitors including foreign ministers, CEOs and ambassadors.
It will showcase new forms of practice including collaborations across design, science, music and future thinking in sustainability and manufacturing. The group of graduates whose work will be on show demonstrates the cultural diversity of British design education, bringing together creative designers from across the globe.
Kingston graduates also designed, manufactured and curated the bespoke display shelving systems which features the creativity of emerging design from Kingston's graduating class of 2012. Launched in July 2012, the display will remain in the ministerial waiting rooms until the end of the year when it will be moved to Kingston University's Knights Park campus. BIS has worked with Kingston to develop this pilot project which they hope to roll out to a range of leading UK universities in 2013.
Deborah Lock said, "This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Kingston University. Not only does it showcase the creativity and innovative nature of students but also that of the academics whose drive and commitment enables our students to reach their full potential. UK Plc is extremely fortunate to have such talented academics and students."
