Irena Kalodera

About

I am an artist filmmaker working as a Visiting Lecturer and tutor on the BA (Hons) Filmmaking course at the Department of Film and Photography. I teach mostly Creative Documentary, Hybrid Short forms and Experimental Film across the first and second years of BA Filmmaking practice Modules, with particular emphasis on Research, Idea Development, and Modalities of Edit.

Films I make expand to a degree of mischief where my lens view produces a hyper-personalised impression where subject/object/landscape filmed reconstruct modalities of perception within precise parameters dictated by the duration, moment in time and that singular act of pointing a camera at something or someone. How I look at things dictates this ‘gleaning' for subjects to film. Insular and mundane expose unrevealed rhythms and tell tales of disconnected visual impressions and auditory streaks. I document fleeting moments, the secret life of objects and gem-like impressions of uninviting and overlooked. Through an act of filming, the information is looped back, and spellbinding impressions of the physical reality of places challenge the direction of the flow between the perceiver and the perceived.

Research

My work explores haptic visuality, also in relation to optical visuality associated with the Renaissance perspective. My interest in the phenomenology of perception from the point of view of studying measurements of physiologic physical stimuli and scientific training, shifted into curiosity towards a more subjective and unquantifiable form of exploration of the same subject. By working with analogue, sound, and experimental use of digital and digital technology, I study sharp dichotomies present within forms of visual poetic expression, with particular attention to the research of sound as a spatial component where the sense of haptic is heightened by choice to use specific ‘chunks' of sound projected back at the audience.

My films and moving image works have been exhibited and screened in the UK and internationally in museums, art centres, and academic institutions, some of which are Milton Keynes Gallery, Oriel Sycharth Gallery, Cubitt Gallery, Estela de Luz Center for Digital Art Mexico City, Institut Français du Danemark Copenhagen, Cleveland Museum of Art Cinematheque Ohio, Mono No Aware New York, Arizona State University Media Art Center, Geritt Rietveld Art Academy Amsterdam,  Slade Research Centre,  Chelsea College of Art, ICA, University of Northampton, Cardiff School of Art & Design, Wrexham Glyndwr University, Salone Donatello Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma.
