What happens next?

Your application will now be passed on to the relevant admissions team for consideration in line with our Admissions Policy. In some cases we may require you to attend an interview, an audition, or send us a portfolio before we make a final decision. We will contact you if this is the case. Please read all emails carefully and ensure you respond or take the necessary actions when prompted to do so. This will enable us to support you as much as possible with your application, from submission through to outcome.

After applying to a university, the following steps generally take place in the admissions process:

Acknowledgement of application

  • Confirmation email: You will receive a confirmation email from the university acknowledging receipt of your application.
  • UCAS Hub: If you applied through UCAS (the central application system for UK universities), you will be able to track your application status on UCAS Hub.

Assessment of application

  • Initial review: The university's admissions team will review your application to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Detailed evaluation: Where applicable your personal statement, references, and qualifications (such as A-levels or equivalent) will be assessed.
  • Interviews or additional requirements: Some courses, particularly competitive or specialized programs (like nursing, education, pharmacy, or art), may require you to attend an interview, take an entrance exam, or submit a portfolio of work.

Offers of admission

There are 2 types of offers that you might receive:

  • Conditional offer: You need to meet specific conditions, such as achieving certain grades in your exams and possibly English language if you require a visa to study in the UK, to secure your place.
  • Unconditional offer: You've met all the entry requirements, and the place is guaranteed without further conditions.

If applying through UCAS, universities can respond by set deadlines:

  • Response time: Universities must reply to your application by certain UCAS deadlines, usually around March to May, depending on when you applied.

Replying to offers

Once you've received all your offers, you'll need to reply:

  • Firm acceptance: Your first choice of university.
  • Insurance acceptance: A backup choice in case you don't meet the conditions of your firm offer.
  • Declining offers: You must decline any other offers you don't want to accept.
  • Making your decision: Be sure to make your Firm and Insurance choices in good time as advised by UCAS, otherwise they may decline all your offer by default.

Waiting for exam results

If you've received a conditional offer, you'll need to wait for your exam results (A-levels, BTEC's, T-Level, IB, or other qualifications). If you meet the required grades, your offer will become unconditional.

Results day (Clearing)

When results are released (usually in mid–August for A-levels), you'll find out if you've met the conditions of your offer:

  • If you meet the conditions: Your place is confirmed. You'll be informed via UCAS Track and directly by the university.
  • If you miss the conditions: You may be accepted onto your firm choice or offered a different course. Alternatively you could go through Clearing to find a new course with available spaces.
  • If you exceed expectations: You can enter Clearing to explore other universities that may have higher requirements than your original offer.

Accommodation and funding

Once your place is confirmed, you'll need to arrange:

  • Accommodation: Apply for university halls or private accommodation if you haven't already or plan to stay at home
  • Student loans and financial aid: Finalise student finance arrangements (such as tuition fee loans, maintenance loans, or scholarships).

May 2025: Student finance deadline!

May 2025 is the deadline for new full-time undergraduate students to apply for your student finance to make sure you get your money sorted before the start of your course. Remember you don't need a confirmed place at university to make your application! To find out more, visit www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance.

Prepare for university

  • Induction and Welcome Week: Universities often send pre–arrival information, including details about induction programs, enrolment procedures, and welcome events.
  • Course preparation: Some universities provide reading lists or preparatory materials before the term starts.

Enrolment

  • Official enrolment: Once you arrive at the university, you will officially enrol, attend orientation, and begin your academic journey.

In the meantime...
