Clinical placements
Health and Counselling at Kingston University offers clinical counselling placements for trainees on approved, advanced training programmes in counselling and psychotherapy. We welcome trainees from integrative, psychodynamic, Gestalt and psychosynthesis training programmes. We do not offer placements for counselling psychology trainees.
Placements begin in September each year, initially for one academic year, and end the following July. An extension for another year may be possible if agreed by the trainee and the University. Counselling takes place at the Health and Counselling Centre on the Penrhyn Road campus.
Qualified practitioners seeking to gain experience of working in a higher education setting may also apply for unpaid positions as associate counsellors. In-house clinical supervision is provided.
Counselling at Kingston University
Health and Counselling offers counselling to students in a time-conscious model, up to a maximum of 10 weekly sessions. (University staff access counselling through the Occupational Health Department.)
In-house group supervision is provided for placement counsellors on a fortnightly basis. Supervision groups may contain supervisees from different clinical orientations. Attendance at supervision is a requirement of the placement, as is personal counselling or psychotherapy. Trainees will usually build up to seeing three clients per week.
Entry requirements
Applicants will be in at least the second year of a recognised diploma, masters degree or doctorate.
Previous experience is valuable, although not a prerequisite. We may accept trainees looking for their first experience of working with clients. Kingston University has a diverse student population and Health and Counselling strives to reflect this in its staff and trainees.
How to apply
To apply, please submit your CV and a covering letter to the counselling team between February and May, for the September intake.
