Innovation and entrepreneurship are now essential for both start-ups and corporations to drive revenue growth. Entrepreneurship and its thinking is emphasised throughout our business programmes and our Marketing & Advertising BSc(Hons) degree includes an Organisations and Entrepreneurship module. Our degrees also include an integrated placement option and as part of this you can work for a funded start-up business or set up your own.
You will develop key practical, interpersonal, critical and creative thinking skills that will help you to create your own business or work as an innovation manager or internal entrepreneur within a larger enterprise. We deliver our modules in a practical, supportive and vibrant student environment in collaboration with the Kingston Enterprise Group. The group has strong links with industry for guest speakers, student projects and future employment opportunities.
The Organisations and Entrepreneurship module develops your understanding of the different types of organisation where marketing takes place. It examines how individuals and groups interact to determine organisational behaviour across a range of organisations, and builds your understanding and appreciation of the importance of an entrepreneurial mind-set.
Students taking the entrepreneurship experience placement will work in a funded start-up environment – either for an existing start-up company or your own venture. You will learn how to identify new entrepreneurial opportunities, develop them through iterative testing, and connect with real users to create market value and achieve competitive advantage. Applying critical and creative thinking towards business modelling and planning for your company, you will develop skills in marketing, pitching, operations, and business funding. All students taking the entrepreneurship experience will participate in a one-week Entrepreneurs Boot Camp, attend entrepreneurial workshops throughout the term, and be coached by both industry and academic mentors.
Our Strategy into Practice seminar series gives you the opportunity to understand strategy in enterprises of all scales. Top managers will give you first-hand accounts of managing complex organisations in the UK and internationally, promoting innovation and creativity, instituting cultural change and managing growth. Speakers to date have included Lord Hastings (KPMG, BT and UNICEF), Karen Hamilton (Unilever), and Greg Dyke (former Director General of the BBC).
In each session, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and network with academic staff and local business leaders. These seminars are also open to students, alumni, staff, the business community and the wider public.
We are committed to helping students, staff, alumni, and all kinds of organisations in the region develop their entrepreneurial potential and progress opportunities into viable projects and enterprises. One of the ways in which we do this is through our Enterprise Insights seminars, which bring in high-profile guest speakers to talk about, and discuss, their personal experiences.
