Professor Fawaz Aldabbagh

Chair of Medicinal / Pharmaceutical Chemistry

About

I gained my BSc in Chemistry from Brunel University in 1994 and PhD in Organic Chemistry from Loughborough University in 1997. After completing two year postdoctoral fellowship at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, I gained my first academic position at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway) in 2000 at the age of 28. At NUI Galway I was Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and for a time, Vice Dean for the College of Science (Research). In 2007, I was Canon Foundation Research Fellow at Kobe University in Japan, and I have held Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Reims Champagne-Ardenne and Le Havre  (France) in 2013 and 2014. I am Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC, UK) since 2009. I joined Kingston University on 1 September 2017 as Professor of Medicinal & Pharmaceutical Chemistry, after 17.5 years at NUI Galway.

Areas of specialism

Professional membership

I am on the Editorial Board for Molecules (Basel, MDPI) and have acted as Guest Editor for the issue "Free Radicals in Organic Synthesis". I was chair of Bioheterocycles 2017 at NUI Galway, and I am on the Scientific Committee of the International Conferences on Heterocycles in Bioorganic Chemistry, which are held biannually across Europe.

I have acted as external examiner at many universities in Australia, Cyprus, Ireland, and the UK, and I have given more than 60 invited and plenary lectures at conferences, universities and industrial companies throughout the world.

I have been appointed Adjunct Professor at the National University of Ireland Galway (2017-2020).

Research

I lead a research group with interests in synthetic organic and polymer chemistry. In particular the discovery of small heterocyclic molecules for the treatment of cancer, and "smart" stimuli-responsive polymeric materials for drug delivery.

I have led pioneering work on the use of benign supercritical carbon dioxide for heterogeneous controlled radical polymerizations, and the use of environmentally friendly methods (including photochemical, visible light; hydrogen peroxide-HX) to synthesize complex small organic molecules. I maintain an interest in free radical reaction mechanisms from an organic, polymer and biochemical perspective.

I have supervised as PI, 22 PhDs to completion, and published 80 peer-reviewed research articles. Some recent publications are shown below.

I welcome talented research students and postdoctoral workers interested in my research both self-funded or interested in making funding applications to contact me with regards to joining my group.
