I have practised and researched architecture and urban design since graduating from the University of Stuttgart in 1993 and have lectured widely in the UK and internationally including at the Deutsche Architektur Museum Frankfurt, ICA London, ETH Zurich, METU Ankara, Turkey, German Jordanian University Amman, Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies Mumbai, Tashkeel Gallery Dubai, UAE, Chulalongkorn University Bangkok, Thailand, and Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago.
I practised with Behnisch & Partners and Auer + Weber, Stuttgart before setting up my own office in Zürich. Buildings include the new University Library Magdeburg (completed 2003, won in competition 1998), social housing in Ingolstadt, Germany (1998), and a housing estate in Shanghai, China (2005).
My current research focuses on the pervasive roles of diagrams as analytical, generative, narrative and critical devices manifest in design practices that draw on thick cultural milieus and that operate at corporeal, architectural and urban scales.
Building on this theoretical strand of my research, I have been investigating representation more widely in urban planning, participatory urbanism, co-production of space by architects and inhabitants, and irregular urbanism. In collaboration with communities and international academic partners, I have undertaken field research on Schlieren, Switzerland, Jabal Al Natheef, Amman, Jordan, Ban Krua, Bangkok, Thailand, Cerro de la Cruz, Valparaiso, Chile.
I am currently researching collaboratively on the co-production of space by the architect BV Doshi and inhabitants of Bimanagar, Ahmedabad, India (see http://howtobuildwithtime.org/), supported by an GCRF award and a RIBA research funding award) and collaborating in the project About-Making.com, supported by an award from the British Council.
I regularly contribute to architectural journals such as Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, OASE, The Journal of Architecture, Journal of Architectural Education, Architectural Research Quarterly, Landscape Architecture Frontiers (Beijing) and Materia Arquitectura (Santiago).
