Dr Heba Ghazal

About

Having worked in academia, the industry and community pharmacies, I have a unique expertise in research, pharmacy practice and academic teaching. In the industry, I have worked on several projects in areas related to the stability of pharmaceutical formulations. This experience was applied in other related areas such as the stability of food preserved in open refrigerators, detection of carcinogenic in herbal drinks and waste management. I have also collaborated with other UK and international universities on various projects related to pharmaceutical analysis, and water treatment/quality. I also supervise MSc and PhD students in Kingston university and other UK universities.

I am senior lecturer at Kingston University, committed to providing high quality teaching and aspire to motivate students to achieve excellent results. I teach a range of topics including: clinical pharmacy, law and ethics, mental health and pharmaceutical numeracy. Since pharmaceutical calculations play an integral role within the pharmacy profession and patient safety, I have a keen interest in teaching pharmacy calculations and developing my teaching methods to aid student understanding.

Academic responsibilities

Senior Lecturer

Qualifications

  • PhD in Biopharmaceutics, Liverpool John Moores University
  • Master's degree, University of Manchester
  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Quality Control and Analytical Methods
  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy

Teaching and learning

Qualifications and expertise

  • Fellow in the Higher education academy (HEA)

Research

  • Environment and pollution related research, including the the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environment
  • The use of biochar obtained from the pyrolysis of municipal solid waste to remove pollutants from water, in particular pharmaceutical waste products and antibiotics.
  • Evaluating the safety of food, the effect of storage conditions on the oxidative stability of lipids in food products.  This is a part of a project in collaboration that aims to evaluate new supermarket shelves that provide a consistent cooling in supermarket fridges.
  • The development and validation of stability indicating methods for the analysis of medicinal substances such as rivaroxaban, sitagliptin and terbinafine in bulk drug substance and pharmaceutical preparations, analytical techniques: HPLC or GC.
  • Comparing the levels of carcinogenic substances polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the herbal drink - Yerba Mate - dried using traditional method versus samples dried using the novel drying system. The aim of the project is to develop a sensitive method to detect and quantify the PAH levels and then apply the method to evaluate the efficiency of the new drying technology on PAH levels.
  • Preparing liquid formulation of drugs which are only available in solid forms and evaluate their stability.
  • Through collaboration with the Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Wroc?aw University of Science and Technology, Poland, a project concerned with air quality and the toxicity and genotoxicity assessment of particulate matters suspended in urban areas has been conducted.
  • Synthesis of pH-responsive hydrogel for the controlled drug delivery. Funded by the IAEA.
  • Pharmacy practice topics. Examples being: the pharmacists' perception towards current issues or changes; their perception about the evolving clinical role of pharmacists; and running audits in a clinical practice.
  • Developing materials that help students ‘visualize' the calculation problems through the use of drawings, simple animations and short videos to illustrate the solutions and to get them to replicate, in their minds, the actual practice.
