Real-life learning: beyond theory

In all our courses at Kingston University, students learn from champions in their sector, and have excellent opportunities to put theory into practice.

Of course, we aim to ensure that students are ready for their first job by helping them develop work-based skills such as career management, IT and communication, numeracy and teamwork. We also take it a step further – giving students real-world projects, many using specialist learning facilities. These will vary course by course but includes:

  • Developing an information system for a real client like the Citizens Advice Bureau.
  • Practising your social work home visits in our practice learning suite.
  • Testing your aircraft designs in our flight simulator.
  • Working with Haymarket publishing on a magazine project.
  • Hunting for evidence in our scene-of-crime house and taking it back to the lab for analysis.
  • Collaborating with a professional film director, like music-video director Jamie Thraves.
  • Helping resolve legal issues in our Community Legal Advice Centre.
  • Setting up your own company and trading as a business.
  • Designing an installation to be showcased in a public gallery or museum.

You will also learn the latest secrets of success from regularly visiting speakers like internationally acclaimed author Hilary Mantel or filmmaker turned YouTube millionaire, Jamal Edwards.
