Communication Design: Illustration MA: What our students say

The greatest lessons I took away from this MA were lessons about myself as a designer and creative. It refined my processes and discipline when it came to tackling work and projects, and armed me with the ability to create my own methods of producing work. The fact that we are part of a framework from different design backgrounds was an advantage. We ended up learning from each other, as well as seeing things from different perspectives.

We have facilities, such as the 3D workshop and print making studio, that open up opportunities to try out things we wouldn't normally be able to in a professional context, and tutors that are supportive and encouraging, all without compromising our direction and vision. The more you put into your time at Kingston, the more you get out of it, the ideal preparation for the real world, whatever your goals.

This course at Kingston Uni has by far been the best I have ever attended! The very competent and knowledgeable tutors, the facilities and the great location close to all of London's museums, exhibition and education spaces.

Choosing Kingston University to do my MA on Illustration was possibly the best decision I have ever made for my creative career. It has been a journey of hard work, learning from mistakes and overcoming insecurities which has certainly paid off. The experience completely exceeds my expectations.

The course curriculum is cleverly designed to bring the best out of each student. I have been extremely lucky to have fantastic tutors who really care and want to help the students make the most of their time in Kingston, encouraging us to push our boundaries and work hard. Studying at Kingston University has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. Recommend 100%.

My previous degree was a BA based on film and radio. After this I found myself moving towards and consciously being drawn to image making and illustration.
I'd been looking to do a Masters in Communication Design for a while because I felt that there was so much more that I needed to learn.

Choosing Kingston was definitely the best choice that I could have made. Being pushed and motivated into experimenting with techniques and materials has helped me to find new ways of working, but also it has helped me to think in ways. The support, advice and motivation that the tutors provided was amazing and really made the degree a great experience. Over the year I've noticed my confidence increase but also identified my potential weaknesses and how to work on them.

The course has been challenging and intense at times, but that has made it all the more worth while and I feel I have learnt so much in my time at Kingston.

The Course helped me to deconstruct my creative practice, so that I could understand how I work and then build up stronger and more effective methods for creating meaningful visuals. I developed better visual research skills, learnt to critically reflect, evaluate, question and test all the way through, while practicing and improving my drawing skills.

With the emphasis taken off style and outcome and with space for mistakes, I was able to really examine content generation and how to communicate ideas visually. I gained so much from doing the MA in Communication Design: Illustration at Kingston.

I would like to say that if you want to develop your thought and style, this course is right for you. This is because I was able to experiment well and think more throughout the course. Every module allowed me to think in order to pass to the next level, which was hard at first. However, I learned through the process more than I expected.

I am very pleased that I chose Kingston and I met my lovely tutors and peers. The tutors always cheered me up and give me suitable references to help my project. I had the opportunity to make everything in both the printmaking studio and the 3D workshop, regardless of material. It was great!

I have learnt many things from this course. Especially, the process of design research. It helped to produce more profound works than before and I improved my works through tutorials and feedback from my peers.

Moreover, the well-equipped facilities allowed me to experiment with various materials and techniques. I had a great time in Kingston University and I can very confidently recommend this course.

"I came on to this course with a background in film. During the past couple of years my interest in illustration has grown and I wanted to try my hand at improving my practice. The course offered me a way to experiment with illustration that took me to unexpected places and outcomes. However, I never felt a lack of confidence due to my background, rather I was encouraged to build on my previous experiences and almost 're-learn' the way I work as a designer. The experience was intensive, but I never felt a lack of support."

"As a freelance illustrator, I took on this course primarily for its emphasis on multidisciplinary design in order to bolster my arsenal as an image maker.

Through the research-based curriculum, I was able to work in a number of aspects in design that were a far cry from my style as an illustrator.

I had the opportunity to experiment with moving image, lenticular design, installation based design, with a heavy involvement in social design queries.

The tutors were an excellent resource in cultivating this confidence to experiment with design elements outside of my comfort zone. Overall, a wonderful and collaborative experience."

"For me, Kingston became essential as it offered the greatest program, in terms of content and quality. The course covered both practical and academic elements, both of which are important for communication to other in creative way.

The modules on offer cover many different interests, the tutors are enthusiastic and engaging, and the facilities for practical work are great; we can use all facilities for making good structures for illustration such as printmaking studio, 3D workshop and academic library."

"I found the Illustration MA at Kingston to be a hugely rewarding and worthwhile experience.

The structure of the course really helped me to develop my own practice and process.

The input from the tutors was fantastic. They were always on hand to push, challenge and encouraged me in order to get the best out of my work.

The interdisciplinary ethos encouraged me not to limit myself to one way of being an illustrator but to push my potential as a visual communicator of creative ideas. I feel that in the long run this will absolutely put me in a good position to pursue a career in the creative industries."
