Recording of Teaching policy (AP5)
The Recording of Teaching Policy (AP5) has been put in place to aid and enhance the student experience. The key information of the policy is summarised on this page.
How is the University recording teaching?
The University is using a system called Panopto to record teaching.
What is recorded?
Recordings include teaching sessions where staff deliver teaching content, such as explanations, demonstrations, worked examples, guided discussion, and/or summary points.
As a minimum, the lecturer’s voice will be recorded though normally the recording will also include a screen recording.
To ensure accessibility, all recordings will be uploaded to Canvas and will be accompanied by Closed Captions and a Full Transcript.
Will I be recorded?
The key objective of the policy is to record the teaching content that staff are delivering and not student contributions.
What is not recorded?
The Recording of Teaching policy does allow for exceptions. There may be times when some or all of a learning and teaching session cannot be recorded. This will be when:
- A session or part of a session is primarily student led e.g. group work, peer discussion or student presentations.
- The session is not a timetabled or scheduled session.
- There is personally-identifiable or confidential data being communicated.
- The nature of the content is sensitive.
- Part of the session contains proprietary information.
- The teaching approach for the class would be compromised by recording and a change to this will impact the staff's teaching and learning experience.
Exceptions
Where an exception is applied then an alternative and equivalent resource(s) will be produced, e.g. annotated PowerPoint presentation that covers all of the key spoken information delivered in a session.
Can I record my university lecture?
Video recording
Video recording of any learning and teaching content by a student is strictly prohibited unless approved by the academic delivering the session and stated in your Summary of Support Needs (SoSN) as a Reasonable Adjustment to remove a disability-related barrier.
Reasonable adjustment
If you are a disabled student with a Summary of Support Needs (SoSN), Kingston University permits you to make your own personal recording of a teaching and learning session as a reasonable adjustment to remove barriers to learning, in line with the Equality Act (2010). These recordings should:
- Be made on your own device
- Be deleted when no longer required for teaching and learning purposes
- Not shared online or with other students
- Only be used to support your learning
Misuse of recordings
Any misuse of University-made or self-made recordings will be subject to University Student Conduct Processes. This includes:
- Making recordings outside of the scope of the Recording of Teaching Policy.
- Uploading recordings to the internet or social media.
- Modifying recordings, or any part of a recording
- Uploading a recording to AI not licenced by Kingston University (see below).
- Providing copies of recordings to the public or students outside of the module.
- Sharing recording extracts, stills or transcripts from the recording.
- Playing a recording in public or broadcasting it.
Do I need to attend lectures or can I watch a recording instead?
Attendance is required
While many timetabled sessions will be recorded under the Recording of Teaching Policy, the availability of these recordings is designed to enhance and supplement learning rather than replace the need for attendance and engagement with the live delivery of sessions.
As a Kingston University student, you are expected to attend all timetabled sessions in your approved mode of delivery e.g. in person. Non-attendance or non-engagement with these sessions will be subject to the University’s attendance and engagement policy (See KU Check In for further information and support).
As such, engagement solely with online recordings of learning and teaching sessions will not count towards your overall study attendance. It should also be noted that any student focused activities such as group work will not be recorded, meaning that non-attendance will impact the quality of learning and teaching that you receive.
Can I use AI tools for recorded lectures?
Microsoft Copilot
Students may only use AI alongside any resources produced under the Recording of Teaching Policy e.g. for the summary of transcripts where the AI tool has been licenced by Kingston University.
At present, the only approved AI tool is Microsoft Copilot.
How to raise concerns
If you have any concerns with regards to the implementation and use of the Recording of Teaching Policy (AP5), you should raise this through the appropriate route below:

- Student Complaints Processes – for concerns relating to the making of Teaching and Learning Recordings for the purpose of Reasonable Adjustments.
