About
Dr. Georgina Sims – Associate Professor, Lead Midwife for Education
My midwifery journey began after I qualified as a nurse and realised that what I truly wanted was to become a midwife. I undertook the 18-month midwifery training at Kingston Hospital, where I quickly came to appreciate the vital role midwives play in promoting women’s health. I have always passionately believed that all women should have access to safe and effective midwifery care. As a student, I became actively involved in the local Royal College of Midwives branch and even served as Chair for a time.
Since qualifying, I’ve worked across both hospital and community settings, always with a focus on supporting women and their families. In 1991, I made the decision to pursue further study, a journey that continues to shape my practice and teaching. That same year, I was appointed Practice Development Midwife, a role I held until 2000 when I became Inpatient Manager for the delivery suite and maternity ward.
I also became a Supervisor of Midwives (SoM) in 1994, appointed by the Local Supervising Authority for London. I held this role until its national discontinuation in 2017, including a two-year secondment with the London Supervising Authority. This experience deepened my understanding of professional practice and midwife accountability, particularly in promoting women-centred care.
In 2004, after completing my MSc in Midwifery, I joined the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education. I’ve held several roles within the midwifery department, including Head of Department from 2016 to 2025. I now continue my contribution as Lead Midwife for Education, and I’m proud to have completed my Educational Doctorate in 2023.
My academic interests are closely aligned with the evolving needs of midwifery education. I am committed to preparing students for the realities of modern healthcare by embedding future-facing skills into our curriculum. This includes fostering digital literacy and simulation-based learning, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership, and promoting cultural competence and inclusive practice. I also emphasise critical thinking and evidence-informed care, alongside sustainability and global health awareness. These elements are essential in developing midwives who are not only clinically skilled but also adaptable, reflective, and ready to meet the challenges of contemporary practice.
